Healthy Food – Healthy Body and Mind

How healthy - healthy body and mind,

Healthy food, healthy body, and mind.

Nowadays, there are so many websites and blogs about healthy food. You can become dizzy from reading so many meanings.
The disease develops because several elements are coming together.

I have written already in the blog, “Balance your world – 9 points to work on,” about it. But there is more to that.
The disease starts with a damaged colon. A healthy colon means a healthy body and a healthy mind.
The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates(ca 460 – 370 BC), the father of medicine, has quoted: ” All disease begins in the gut!”. That is the truth!
People nowadays have lost touch with natural, healthy food. They eat food bought in the supermarket, which cannot be called food anymore.

Fruits and vegetables are picked unripe, stored for weeks. Til they arrive in the supermarkets, they are stripped of vital minerals and vitamins, antioxidants. Nearly nothing is left anymore. People buy them, store them again at home, cook them. This so-called “Food ” is dead food; nothing is left to build up cells, nourish, and detox the body.

Vegetables are grown on mineral deficient soil, treated with poison, which stays back in the soil. People don’t think about this when they are finally becoming ill. They are going to see their GP, getting medicine, and becoming more ill. Chronic diseases are developing.

What is healthy food?

Healthy food, vegetables, and fruits grow naturally in healthy soil, not treated, not destroyed by chemical and physical processes. Food should not be stored for months on a shelf in a supermarket. There are enough methods to keep food for some months in a healthy manner.

That is the fermentation of vegetables, for example. But there are more ways.
Healthy vegetables and fruits are organic. You better buy them in farmer markets. They have all sorts of seasonal vegetables and fruits that have riped in the sun.

Animals raised on pastured fields, living a life as God has created them. Cows eat grass, which they keep chewing. They have four stomachs that are not made eating corn and soy. Chicken and other poultry can run outdoors, eating beetles and worms. Meat from these animals is healthy and has all nutrition that we need.
We don’t need to eat milk products. They are not suitable for us. And mostly is the milk from cows treated with antibiotics and hormones. Also, it is better not to consume cheese very often. It is well allowed in the Keto diet I will talk about in this blog.

Wild-caught fish is better than cultivated fish, which are most times treated with antibiotics! Of course, we need to be aware that bigger fish, like mackerel and tuna, are heavily polluted with mercury and other heavy metals and plastics. It is better to eat small fish like sardines and anchovies. Also, it is better to eat fatty fish because the brain needs omega 3. Sardines are perfect, which contain different sorts of selenium.

It is also good to eat healthy nuts, seeds, sprouted seeds, and healthy fats like coconut oil, olive oil, and butter. They are good choices. And very important for the brain.

What is the Best Diet?

I can recommend the Ketogenic or Low carb diet for healing chronic disease and the gut from my own experience and longtime study. That is the best anti-inflammatory diet. When I had been really ill, I tried several forms of diets. The Paleo diet is what I follow now.
The vegan diet is also perfect, but it was not for me. I need meat, not very much, but still, it is essential for me.

The low-carb diet allows only vegetables as a source of carbohydrates. Most of this diet is fat and protein.
The ketogenic diet is a very high fat, deficient in carb diet, which also helps to lose weight.

This is why this diet has initially gotten a lot of attention for its weight loss benefits. The goal of this diet is to enter and stay in a metabolic state called ketosis. Instead of burning carbohydrates, you burn fat for energy.

In the modern diet, we eat a lot of sugar, and our brains and muscles are fueled by glucose ( a type of sugar). This comes from eating carbohydrates. This sugar is flushing the body and creating inflammation in the body. To get rid of the sugar, the pancreas needs to produce a lot of insulin. And finally becomes exhausted.

Diabetes starts to develop. Worldwide this disease is on the rise, diabetes type 2 mainly resulting from a wrong lifestyle.
If we stop eating those carbs, the glucose levels drop, and we begin to use our fat for having energy.
Researchers have discovered that the body creates compounds called ketones, which contain benefits, such as fat loss, suppressing appetites, boosting mental clarity, and significantly lower the risk of many chronic diseases.

How to start a Ketogenic diet?

First of all, you need to stop eating carbohydrates like bread, pizza, cake, biscuits, pasta. It is not easy because this food has an addicting effect on the brain. I would recommend starting taking in a good Vitamin B complex. That helps to cut and control the carbohydrates’ cravings—also magnesium, selenium, and a mineral complex. You still need to take fiber in. Ground Flaxseed is an excellent fiber.

You will consume about 70 – 80 % fats, about 15 – 2- % protein, and about 5 % carbs on a standard keto diet. The cravings will disappear. The body goes into the Ketosis state. Your body temperature will get in balance again. Your thyroid will work better. Cells get starved of sugar. And that is where healing begins.
Your keto diet should contain a high amount of healthy fats. I already mentioned fats, such as coconut oil, olive oil, grass-fed butter. But also nuts and seeds. All organic.
You should eat non-starchy vegetables, like broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables, leafy greens are perfect, asparagus, cucumber, and zucchini.keto diet, salmon and lemon on a wooden plank

I would be careful with cucumbers. They can make you cold. But you could cook them.
It will be best if you eat in moderation amounts of proteins, like grass-fed meat, pasture-raised poultry, cage-free eggs, wild-caught fish, organ meats, etc., full-fat dairy products, best raw. In contrast, I am usually against milk products, but some experts recommend fermented milk products, like yogurt and raw milk cheese. I have never eaten milk products while healing my gut, and by avoiding them, you fasten your healing.

Actually, I think that nobody, even healthy individuals, should drink and eat milk because they produce inflammation.

Very beneficial is bone broth, which I have consumed quite often, nearly daily, and healed my intestines.

What to avoid

You should cut down on fruits because most fruits have a high sugar amount. But there are enough sorts of fruits left which you are allowed to consume. Fiber is important. And by eating some fruits and vegetables, you will get enough fiber in this diet. Fiber is needed for your gut.

All berries are allowed. Melons, Citroen, peaches, nectarines, and avocados are good. Avocados are great to eat. They contain a lot of healthy fat.different berries on a wooden plank
I have to tell you that I also eat apples and pears cooked. If you eat this healthy diet, it doesn’t matter if you eat in moderation pineapple or mangos. The health benefit of these fruits is far more than the sugar content. But when you begin this diet, you are better off not eating fruits with a high amount of sugar at all.

I recommend switching after some months to the Paleo diet. They are nearly the same, but with Paleo, you can eat all organic vegetables and fruits and no milk products. However, first, you need to heal your gut.
The dangerous foods to avoid in both diets are carbohydrates like pasta, bread, chips, cakes, etc. This is not food at all!

Final Thought

Healthy food is all-natural food, not processed at all. And when processed, then done by, for example, a healthy method like fermentation.
Before industrialization, people didn’t use all the self-created poison to kill insects and preserve food. They didn’t eat very much and certainly not industrial-made food, which contains too much sugar and salt.

But these days, people eat and suffer starvation because this so-called food is stripped of nutrition, vitamins, enzymes, minerals, etc., which makes people wanting to eat more, increasing their weight, and developing inflammation and chronic diseases. It is a vicious circle.
To get out of that circle, people need to wake up and see what they are doing, how they damage themselves. They need to adjust their lifestyle, and certainly their nutrition, their food.

Healthy food means a healthy body and a healthy mind.  If you have a healthy body, you have a healthy brain.
A good and healthy way is the low-carb diet, ketogenic diet, but also Paleo diet. The body is healing again, and so the mind!
Try it out! The best you can do!

I would love to hear from you about your experiences with diet.

To your health,

Sylvia

    Hello Sylvia,

Hanks for this very educational article. Feeding is one part of the human life that can either add to our lives and make it better or the other way round. I have seen many people who suffer because they do not eat the right food to help their body system and that is lack of proper enlightenment. With such an article, there is room for people to learn and start eating well

    1. Hello Reece.
Thank you so much for your comment. I really appreciate it. And you are so right. As a nurse, I see so many people choosing to eat the wrong food and get ill. Sadly to see that. But most of them don’t want to listen.

I completely agree with your understanding of healthy food. And I think it is pretty easy nowadays to track such food. Because many countries have established ways to track production from farms to your plate.

But I was quite disappointed to see that in Europe, not everything labeled bio is 100% free of contamination. There is a certain level or curtains pesticides that can still be used even within the bio label.

So, we need to check the labels of what we are buying.

    Thanks

  3. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment. Yes, you are right; we need to be careful in the supermarket. The best is really to buy on farmer’s markets or in organic shops. I do always buy my meat from trustworthy butchers I know. And that is very often not even more expensive than in the supermarket.

  4. It’s very true that what we eat defines who we are, ow healthy we’d be and how well we’ll grow.  This is a good article that is very enlightening and it’ll teach a lot of people how to live and eat healthily. Our mind functions in a very special way and it can be affected of the health is not balanced. Thanks

As much as eating healthy can really make the difference for us but you cannot eat healthy when you dont know what healthy food is. That is the reason I value this post here and it makes so much more sense to see here. Honestly, what has been shared here us worthy and can make the most difference, going forward. Thank you so much for sharing all these here with us all. Thumbs up to you and thanks for sharing

    1. Thank you, Darmi! You are so right. It is so important to eat the right food. To keep diseases off.

Eating healthy and fresh foods can never be overemphasized, it rejuvenates the immune system and also helps you fight diseases I actually like the vegan diet, but I can’t be on it because I love meat, I also like the ketogenic diet but I prefer low carb diet. It’s a little balanced and I work with that, it is also very healthy. This article was really enlightening

    1. Thank you very much, Collins. The Vegan diet is perfect if you eat organic food, but most people need some meat. Carbs are not healthy, only if they are fresh vegetables. But if you are healthy and have a strong immune system, you can eat carbs like bread sometimes. But not too much. 😉

I had a friend the other day recommended this post to me because i told her that i have started to eat healthy and then described my diet LOL. So she asked me if i understood what healthy food is and now i have a much greater understanding of what i should be doing and will re-plan my schedule !

    1. Thank you very much. I appreciate it a lot. Now I will tell you that the Keto diet is perfect when you are ill. If you are healthy, it is better to follow the Paleo diet. They are nearly the same, but the Keto doesn’t allow any sugar and only certain vegetables. That is important to starve inflamed cells in people who have chronic diseases or cancer. Because for example, cancer cells thrive on sugar. I will write a blog on both diets. The important thing is here to eat only quality food, organic. And no high- glycemic carbs. Because of the sugar content they have. If you are healthy, you better off staying with natural food, not processed at all, and not treated with poison. You find them on farmer’s markets. Thank you very much!

Just looking at your picture makes me want to eat avocado right now, maybe a toast with an egg. Back to the topic, I agree. There are just so many contradicting information out there about what is healthy. I remembered once that margarine used to be healthy and also the sugar is better than fat, good old times and then came along Atkins. We are so confused as a consumer!

I saw this ted talk the other day and they said that we should take care of our gut microbiome just like you said that it is linked to our health. I also heard about this fecal transplant…… I rather eat healthy then going with such an extreme approach.

I see a lot of people do feel better when they follow ketogenic. I find that I need carbs, I am Asian after all and I do feel best when I eat rice. However, I tried to eat less portion of rice and focus more on complex carbs that is whole and organic like you said. I guess the healthiest diet is the diet that has variation. You mix and match as you go, that way you get all the  nutrients that you need. Happy to see that keto works for you though.

    1. Yes, you are right, Nuttanee. Thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! You know, I think the Keto diet is good for people who have chronic diseases or cancer because you avoid all sugars by not eating any grains and products made out of sugar and fats. The body goes into a fat-burning mode for getting energy. So the cells will not get sugar anymore. This kills, for example, cancer cells. If you have a healthy body, you can eat some rice. That is perfectly fine. But all processed “food” you better avoid anyway. They are no good. I am on a Paleo diet now. It is the best diet for me now, and I believe for many people. They are nearly the same, but with Paleo, you can have raw honey, all vegetables, and fruits. And all organic, not processed. Milk products are not good for most people. But even then, a cheese made out of raw milk for sometimes I think it will not harm a healthy body. I will write a blog about both diets because I see that people don’t understand these diets.
      All the best!

    Hi Sylvia,

Thanks for a very important addition to the fight to break the vicious cycle that humankind is in! This is a very valuable article!

As humans, we really need to go back by a few centuries, to the time when people lived on natural food such as is found on FARMS. Going back, is the only way we can really be able to go forward, being socioeconomically strong and healthy.

The poor modern diets make our bodies unable to cope with both infectious and non-infectious diseases. And just look what we are having right now – two sister pandemics that require our bodies to be in best shape and certainly not obese!

    Regards

    1. Thank you so much for your comment, Teboho. I see you are also very much involved in helping people to get better. Yes, only natural, not processed food makes us strong. Combined with moving, fitness, walking, dancing… People are so disconnected from others and themselves and nature. And you are so right; if we don’t strengthen our immune systems, we will lose. Our defense, the immune system, needs to protect us. But many people are weak in body and mind, and spiritual. Great comment!
      Blessings, Sylvia
