I said in my last blog that I don’t recommend isolated supplements. Because all minerals and vitamins are working together, and to take only one could be okay if you have a proven deficiency. I prefer whole food, natural food like a so-called superfood.

But there are some supplements I recommend taking. Because they have all nutrients in the right form, our body recognizes them and can use them. But that I will explain in another blog.

Chlorella and Spirulina are whole food, also called a superfood. They are algues but categorized as food. For our health, they have enormous benefits.

What is Chlorella?

Chlorella is microalgae that grow in freshwater. Most are grown in Japan and Taiwan. They are cultivated, harvested, and processed. They are processed and made into supplements. Chlorella has a growth factor, which makes it a superfood. It contains chemicals, including amino acids, peptides, proteins, vitamins, and nucleic acids. The amount of protein, carbohydrates, and fats can vary significantly, depending on Chlorella’s cultured sort. You need to be aware of what you are going to purchase.

Wikipedia says: ” Chlorella is a genus of single-celled green algae belonging to the division Chlorophyta. It contains the green photosynthetic pigments chlorophyll – a and – b in its chloroplast. In ideal conditions, it multiplies rapidly, requiring only carbon dioxide, water, sunlight, and a small number of minerals to reproduce.”

Chlorella is taken from the Greek, meaning green, and the Latin diminutive suffix Ella, meaning small.

It has been considered a source of food and energy because its photosynthetic efficiency can reach 8%, exceeding other highly efficient crops such as sugar cane.

There are several species of Chlorella. Chlorella Vulgaris and pyrenoidosa are the most used in supplements.

Chlorella is a dark-green colored micro-algae that is the world’s richest natural source of chlorophyll.

It has a strong cell wall and needs to be broken before digesting it. Cracked cell wall Chlorella provides a tremendous source of concentrated nutrition.

What are Chlorella’s nutrients?

The benefits of Chlorella are the highest source of chlorophyll. It has 10 times the amount of chlorophyll found in Alfalfa. It has nearly 60% protein,23% carbohydrates, 10% fat. 100 g Chlorella has more protein than 100 g beef. It contains all nine essential amino acids. That makes it a great supply, also for Vegans.

Chlorella is a good source of iron and vitamins, including Vitamin C, B vitamins, K, A. It provides magnesium, zinc, copper, potassium, calcium, antioxidants, but also omega -3s. They are a good source of fiber.

What is Chlorella Growth Factor?

Chlorella contains the CGF( Chlorella Growth Factor) that gives the plant its exceptional reparative abilities. It is produced during photosynthesis, and the cells multiply rapidly into four cells every twenty hours. CGF helps repair damaged cells in humans and slows down the aging process. It contains nucleotide-peptide, glycoprotein, nucleic acid- polysaccharides, and sulfur.

Immunity is the most important factor. CGF prevents viruses from growing, increases the body’s resistance against infection, and controls cancer cells’ growth in our body.

It stimulates interferon production, macrophages, secretion of tumor necrosis factor, and fibroblast activity. Maybe in these times of Covid 19 and all the chronic diseases, the best prevention among others people could do to strengthen their immune system is because CGF has a strong influence on T cells that defeat viruses and cancer.

Macrophages destroy cancer cells, foreign proteins, and chemicals. Our immune system shield! It stimulates the body’s defense system, and that is always the most important army against viruses, bacterial, fungi, and all kinds of mutated cells.

Benefits of Chlorella

One of the benefits of Chlorella is really its amount of protein. If you take Chlorella, you actually don’t need to eat so much meat anymore. You can take it to grow muscles. Of course, you need then to do fitness too, like bodybuilding.

Chlorella improves your whole body system. It keeps the body clean. The chlorophyll alkalizes the body; it removes heavy metals in the body. Your skin will look softer and beautiful again because of complete detoxification. Researchers have proven that Chlorella removes heavy metals like mercury, cadmium, nickel, and dioxin.

The fascinating point for me is that it keeps the immune system strong. This is really the most important because we are prone to diseases without a strong defense system.

This is the reason that I strongly recommend a good green juice powder with a good mix of all kinds of whole food, including Chlorella and Spirulina. The increasing interferon production in the body makes Chlorella one of the most powerful food we can better take daily.

One benefit of Chlorella is lowering cholesterol levels. Taken daily, it improves LDL and triglycerides in people with high blood pressure because of its vitamin B content, fiber, carotenoids, and antioxidants.

Vitamin B 12 is essential for the arteries and blood cell count. Red blood cells carry oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. So in this manner, it improves your heart and makes heart diseases belonging to the past.

Clinical studies found out that Chlorella also improves joint health. This is because inflammation is improved, and the stiffness and achiness are reduced. In this study, women suffering from stiffness in the morning were able to move better. So Chlorella might be great for arthritis.

Important thoughts

Maybe there are points to think about as well. Most people have no problems taking Chlorella supplements.

It is actually recognized as safe by most authorities. But with everything that is a potent immune modifier, you could have some problems while using Chlorella.woman bathing in flowers

Maybe some people could experience nausea and abdominal discomfort. If you have unhealthy intestines, you might be careful with taking supplements. It is always better first to adapt your diet and try juicing till your body is recovering. Colon cleanses useful when you start with your healing journey.

Chlorella could be too heavy for your stomach in the beginning. If you are sick, you don’t have strong stomach acids. And you might not be able to digest Chlorella or spirulina. It might feel like having a stone in your stomach.

First, take the steps of healing your colon. Otherwise, you will not be able to digest any supplement, even this whole food.

Chlorella stimulates the immune system. If you have immunodeficiency or you are on immune system medications, you might be careful as well. I see healing as a whole process. This means there are more factors to the beginning of your healing journey. See my blogs! Every healing starts with the recovering of the bowels. I will write more about that soon.

Final Thought

Chlorella is a whole food that gives beautiful support to all your bodily processes. It stimulates the Immune system and is a potent modifier of the immune system. With spirulina and other superfoods, adjusting your lifestyle to a healthy diet, moving your body, and reducing stress, you have a key to a long life with a healthy body and mind.

If you are still very ill, suffering from a chronic disease, you better start to heal your body by taking small steps before taking any potent superfood. They could be too strong for your weak body. But they are excellent whole food to help your healing and finally to stay healthy.

To your health,

Sylvia

  1. I spend a lot of time on insta and an influencer dear to me recommended chlorella and after some googling I decided to give it a try. Now I almost never forget to drink my water, it has that perfect, unreal shade of green that even the kiddos like.

    1. Hi Aurora, You do really great! The best to do is consuming Chlorella and Spirulina. Your body will be pleased very much! Keep on doing it!:)

I’m right there with you on supplements. I also prefer whole foods where possible! I have heard of Spirulina but not Cholrella! I think that’d be ok as a supplement. Hard to get that in a whole food in your diet and the health benefits are great! Thank you for sharing!

  3. I didn’t know that chlorella contains amino acids. I had heard it being labeled as a superfood so I decided to research why. I am glad I did because this research has exceeded my original expectations. 10 times the amount of chlorophyll found in Alfalfa is unbelivable! Thank you very much for this very useful post!

    1. Hi Paolo, Thank you very much for your comment. Yes, Chlorella’s so much chlorophyll is nearly unbelievable, but that makes Chlorella a very excellent whole food. You should try it and let us know what you think!

Thank you for sharing your article about the benefits of Chlorella. It is good to know that beside Vitamins, there are also some super natural foods which are not only natural but also Biologic similar to Chlorella. However, I found out about Chlorella from your post and would like to check it out.

Could I take it with food? How many times per day I could take it?

    1. Thank you very much for your comment! Yes, Chlorella is a masterpiece; it is so good for the body. To your question of how much you could take, it depends on what kind of Chlorella you consume. Do you take tablets? Mostly you can find it on the bottle how much you should take. But there is not really a limit. I use it as a powder in my juice and drink it 2x a day. It is not quite cheap. But because I use so many so-called superfoods, I don’t pay attention to how much Chlorella I use. But everyday 2 spoonful in my juice is perfect. I use a mixture of different ingredients.

  5. Hi Sylvia, thank you for this piece, I always thought that meat was the only source of complete proteins, in other words, containing all the amino acids that your body needs. I never thought that Chlorella also contains all the amino acids. Is there a recommended daily dose? I would like to start incorporating Chlorella into my diet.

    1. Hi John, Thank you very much for your comment! Yes, you are right; Chlorella has amazing health benefits. The protein makes Chlorella and Spirulina great food for Vegans, but of course for all of us. Some people have to be careful with it, for example, if you have an autoimmune disease as I have. It can be quite strong at the beginning of changing the diet. There is actually no recommended dose. You can always use what they recommend on the bottle. That is mostly already enough for the day. Don’t take it for the night. It could be that you will have too much energy then, and you might not fall asleep.  I use it as a mix with other so-called superfoods and take it twice per day. Try it! I am sure you will be amazed!
